What to Look for When Renting a Private Plane or Jet

aircraft-engine-repairsTravelling in a private plane or jet is not only a luxury, it also makes travel less stressful. There are fewer delays due to aircraft engine repairs, no security lines, and a relaxing travel experience with only passengers you choose as companions.  Today, many companies offer private jets or planes for rent so that those who prefer travelling in a private plane avoid the aircraft engine repair, fuel, and storage costs.  However, it is important to know what to look for when renting private aircraft.

Type of Aircraft

The first thing to determine is the type of aircraft that best suits your needs.  If you are travelling with just one or two other passengers for a short distance and have a limited budget, you would probably choose a light jet.  For those travelling a longer distance with a larger group, a heavy jet may be the better option.  Heavy jets offer more options, such as flight attendants, full meal service and entertainment, but are more costly than light jets.  Always ask about aircraft engine repair, no matter what type of aircraft you choose.

Ask About Aircraft Engine Repair

When checking with jet rental agencies, ask about the maintenance of the available planes.  It is always best to choose rental agencies that are FAA-authorized operators, as they are more likely to follow all regulations, and whose airplane mechanics are well-versed in aircraft engine repair.  Ask to see the plane, both inside and out, so that you can be sure the plane meets your needs and is structurally and mechanically sound.

Request Documentation

Be sure to request FAA documentation, insurance information, and records of third-party audits of the charter companies.  Every charter must have a valid Part 135 air taxi certificate, and charter companies should be able to provide an Air Carrier Certificate issued by the FAA.  Higher insurance limits also indicate that the company has been audited by an insurance company and that there is a greater likelihood that the company will provide a safe flight.  In addition, the Aviation Research Group and Wyvern often conduct independent audits, reviewing safety, aircraft engine repair documentation, and other facts related to charter airlines—the results of which are published and easily accessible upon request.

What Do You Know About the Eurofighter Typhoon?

aircraft-engine-repairThe Eurofighter Typhoon, among the world’s most advanced new generation combat aircraft, offers a careful attention to design, requires minimal aircraft engine repair, and is Europe’s largest military collaborative program.  The twin-engine canard-delta wing, multirole fighter is created by a trio of companies—EADS, Alenia Aeronautica and BAE Systems—acting under one holding company, Eurofighter GmbH, formed in 1986.  Covington Aircraft, a leader in aircraft engine maintenance, offers insight into this magnificent plane.

History of the Eurofighter

As early as 1971, the United Kingdom identified a need for a new fighter aircraft. The initial design, known as the P.96, met the requirements of the UK, and was very similar to the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.  Due to the popularity of the Hornet, the P.96 showed little room for growth or the possibility of an export market.

However, West Germany, which also had a need for a new fighter plane, developed the TKF-90, which was a cranked delta wing with forward canard controls.  The British agreed to the overall configuration and entered into an agreement with Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm (MBB) and British Aerospace to develop a plane that, at the time, was called the European Combat Aircraft.  In 1979, the Eurofighter name was attached to the aircraft.  There was significant political turmoil regarding the plane, as various countries demanded specific options, including radar selection and carrier capabilities.   The maiden flight of the aircraft took place in Bavaria on March 27, 1994, flown by Chief Test Pilot Peter Weger.  The United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain procured orders for the plane, beginning in 1998, and on Aug. 4, 2003, Germany accepted the first Eurofighter.

Eurofighter Capabilities

The Eurofighter Typhoon, with its relaxed stability and design, operates with agility at both supersonic and low speeds.  The plane features a glass cockpit with three full-color multifunction, head-down displays.  User needs were given high priority in the design of the cockpit as feedback from military pilots and specialists at the testing facility helped create the layout and functionality.  The aircraft provides a Flight Control System that allows for rapid and automatic recovery with the press of a button should a pilot become disoriented.  The plane offers voice control and a search and track system superior to many other fighter planes.

Eurofighter Aircraft Repair

Like most fighter planes, the Eurofighter Typhoon has aircraft engine maintenance requirements.  In 2011, a Typhoon sustained extensive damage during landing when the landing gear did not deploy.  The accident was deemed to be pilot error, but the National Audit Office observed that this incident happened at a time when a shortage of parts existed, mostly due to limited distribution of parts from several European countries.  This resulted in longer than average aircraft engine repair times.  These issues have since been resolved, and the Eurofighter Typhoon, according to aviation mechanics, has similar maintenance and repair instances as other planes.

The Importance of Aircraft Engine Overhaul

Aircraft engine overhaul can significantly increase the resale value of an aircraft, but even more importantly, an overhaul can extend the life of an aircraft engine and make the aircraft safer to fly.  Normal wear on the metal parts of an aircraft engine can lead to tolerance increases and poor performance, which could eventually lead to engine failure.  In addition, an aircraft engine overhaul allows for mechanical inspection of the engine to diagnose an issue before it becomes a major problem………read more.
